Reading Between the Lines

Described video (DV) is to the blind and vision-impaired what closed captioning is to the deaf. DV provides a descriptive narration of the key visual elements in television programs and other visual media to make them more accessible to people with visual disabilities. On a secondary audio track, a highly trained narrator provides the vocal description of the visuals imparted unspoken action within the natural pauses in the dialogue. A full DV mix consisting of the main program audio combined with these narrated descriptions is accessible through most TVs and VCRs via the secondary audio program (SAP).

The key to superior Described Video is strong descriptive writing coupled with quality narration and production, while achieving even the tightest budgets and turnaround time. Our focus is to provide a superior product through outstanding script writing and narrative performance, and through the use of state of the art production facilities.

Descriptive Video Works is known across Canada as the most prominent company providing full service described video services. We are committed to respecting your deadlines and budget, working with you to achieve your goals. Production

We work with all standard broadcast formats, including Digital Betacam, Betacam SP, Betacam SX, and Quicktime. We also have the capability to work with High Definition television (HDTV). We require the finished broadcast ready audio mix with the final picture lock on your master tape or clone. We can also provide DA88 tapes and/or CD’s of the finished Described Video mix as well as other formats. SDI closed captioning encoding system is compatible with all closed captioning formats. Our state of the art production facility and expert production staff ensure the highest standards of broadcast quality.

Writers

Descriptive writing is a thoughtful, creative and time consuming discipline. Our experienced writers have received extensive training and are skilled at selecting the precise words needed to paint a vivid and lasting image. It takes our highly trained writers 8 -10 hours to write a one hour show. All writers train for 2 months until they are certified DV writers. We're very proud of all our talented writers. One of our writers was one of the screenwriters for FIDO, a screenplay that was featured at the Toronto Film Festival and Vancouver Film Festival.

Narrators

Our exceptional team of narrators understand the subtleties involved in narrating movies, documentaries, television series and ensure the narration is a true enhancement of the program, rather than a distraction for either the vision impaired or sighted audience. We match the style of each program with appropriate voice talent.

Delivery

Descriptive Video Works can deliver your show directly to the broadcaster or to your post production house if required. Our studio operates 7 days a week and our staff have worked in the broadcast industry and understand the importance of meeting tight timelines and getting it right the first time. We can have your show completed and returned to you within 3 to 4 days.

Focus Groups

Descriptive Video Works prides itself on working with blind and vision impaired groups to ensure we continue to produce superior described video for the broadcasters, independent producers and the vision impaired and blind. We hold focus groups with the vision impaired and blind to ensure we are meeting their needs. We proudly work with CNIB, Canadian Council for the Blind and ASIC, the Association for the Sight Impaired Consumer.
