Congratulations to the incredibly talented Brie Larson for her Oscar win at the 88th Annual Academy Awards this past Sunday. Larson took home the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Joy Newsome in the critically acclaimed movie Room. The dramatic film is a Canadian-British-Irish production based on Emma Donoghue’s novel of the same name.

I had the distinct pleasure of writing the described video script for this thrilling and thought-provoking movie and I will admit that it was definitely a challenge to translate Larson’s nuanced performance for a blind and partially sighted audience. The anguish and hope she pours into her character as she navigates a stark reality as a captive, rape victim and young mother resulted in an incredibly layered performance. As I watched the picture (on the edge of my seat most of the time!), I was struck by the fact that Larson literally ran the gamut of emotions during the course of the movie – depression, hope, terror, desperation, excitement, rage – as she found her way back to freedom and redemption with her young son.

It was truly an honour to be part of the team bringing this movie to DVW’s audiences. On behalf of myself and everyone at Descriptive Video Works – we would like to send heartfelt congratulations to Brie and the entire cast and crew of Room.
