Descriptive Video Works enables NBC Olympics to offer inclusive viewing experience for people with visual disabilities.
STAMFORD, CONN. – August 17, 2016 – NBC Olympics, a division of the NBC Sports Group, has selected Descriptive Video Works to provide video description for its production of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, which are taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The announcement was made today by NBC Olympics President, Gary Zenkel, Comcast Vice President of Accessibility, Tom Wlodkowski, and President & CEO of Descriptive Video Works, Diane Johnson.
Descriptive Video Works will help make NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics more accessible than ever, by providing unprecedented video description (VDS) coverage. NBC Olympics is presenting video description to accompany 15 primetime telecasts of the Rio Games. In addition, descriptive video will be incorporated into NBC’s Video On Demand offerings of the Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony.
“We are thrilled to help bring video description to NBC’s audience”, said Johnson. “Our professional, specially-trained presenters are describing NBC’s coverage of the Olympics and capturing the athletes’ moments of excitement and emotion that would otherwise be missed by people with a visual disability.”
“We are pleased to work with Descriptive Video Works to offer more accessible coverage for Olympic fans than ever before,” said Zenkel. “The enhanced access will allow even more people in the U.S. to share in the stories and excitement of the Rio Olympics.”
“Enjoying the Olympics should be a universal experience,” said Wlodkowski. “By adding description to the broadcast, NBC is making sure even more people can participate in the thrills and excitement of the Rio Games.”
Video description is the use of short verbal descriptions of action or key video scenes to add context to programing for individuals with a visual disability. Descriptive Video Works’ specialists, with years of sportscaster experience, will precisely and vividly describe key elements of NBC’s coverage of the Games and sports as they unfold. This narration provides a description of key visuals like actions, facial expressions, clothing, event locations and on-screen graphics.
