Descriptive Writers/Trainers
ROBERT CHOMIAK, Trainer/Describer
Robert Chomiak has been with Descriptive Video Works for more than 6 years and, to date, has described a combined total of 700 TV episodes and feature-length films. Robert graduated from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta with a B.A. in Dramatic Arts and went on to study for two years in the Film Program at Simon Fraser University in B.C. His passion for screenwriting led him to co-write a zombie comedy feature, Fido, which was produced with an $11 million budget and has since developed a cult following. He has also written English adaptations for three animated theatrical features (Jin-Roh, the Wolf Brigade, Escaflowne – The Movie) and 207 episodes on seven animated series (Gundam Seed, Zoids, Inuyasha), which have aired on Cartoon Network and Teletoon. His other television work includes the sitcom Alienated and the Gemini-nominated children’s special Twisteeria. In addition, Robert has been awarded screenwriting grants on three other feature film projects, one of which has attracted Hollywood interest. As a describer he has been instrumental in raising the bar in order to provide the highest quality descriptions for the blind and vision impaired.
MIRANDA MACKELWORTH, Head Writer and Trainer
Miranda is a seasoned writer who came to Descriptive Video Works in 2007. She has described hundreds hours of television programs, documentaries and feature film projects. As an indispensible member of the team, she has contributed invaluable research, helped to establish writing guidelines, provided training for new writers, and has chaired the Committee for the Development of Live Audio Description Standards. She also works with the co-chairs of Research and Development, organizing focus groups to ensure that our descriptions meet the needs of the end-users. As a writer of children's stories, Miranda loves the idea that Described Video is "painting pictures with words" for the blind and vision-impaired audience. She believes there is no greater compliment than hearing that we have transformed someone's television experience by allowing them to follow a TV show or a movie plot.
